Pedophilia, a form of paraphilia, can best be defined by the American Psychiatric Association's 1994 Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). According to the DSM-IV, a pedophile is as an individual who has recurrent, intense, sexually arousing fantasies about or engages in sexual behaviors involving prepubescent children 13 years old or younger. Within research on child sexual offenders, the terms pedophile and child molester are used interchangeably; however, the former is used within the psychiatric arena of assessment, diagnostics, and treatment of the sexual offender.

Types of Pedophile Organizations

Pedophiles exist within our diverse society and embody certain characteristics. Regardless of the typology or paradigm used to make clinical sense of these child sexual offenders, one thing remains constant, and that is societal disdain for such behavior. Perhaps even more alarming than the actual behavior is the fact that these offenders form groups that promote and accept their deviance toward children. Such groups include, but are not limited to, the following: NAMBLA (North American Man-Boy Love Association), Free Spirits, Renee Guyon Society, The Pedophile Liberation Front, and the Childhood Sensuality Circle (CSC).

NAMBLA is perhaps the most notorious group. It is a well-organized association comprising primarily homosexuals who have a preference for sexual relations with young boys. NAMBLA has offices in several major cities, with their headquarters in New York City. According to their Web site information, their purpose is to support the rights of all people to engage in consensual relations. They oppose laws that destroy loving relationships merely on the basis of the age of the participants.

NAMBLA unequivocally condemns all coercive or nonconsensual acts, sexual or otherwise, between people of any age. They believe, however, that a consenting child as young as 6 years old can understand sexual relations and should be allowed to engage in such activities. In addition to pedophilia, NAMBLA also endorses other sexually aberrant behavior, such as infantilism, cross-dressing, bestiality, erotic asphyxiation, and exhibitionism. They feature an “Entrapment of the Month” column on their Web site, alerting members on how to avoid covert government child pornography sting operations.

The Rene Guyon Society is also a national organization. This organization's purpose is based on Guyon's writings of The Ethics of Sexual Acts, written in 1934. The organization's motto is “Sex before eight or else it's too late.”

Perhaps one of the more outspoken of the organizations promoting sexual relationships with children is the Pedophile Liberation Front. Their Web site features excerpts for children regarding the cause and purpose of their organization, which attempt to manipulate the reader into thinking that pedophiles are not dangerous people and that they can be trusted despite what their parents may have otherwise indicated.

Regardless of the organization, the groups have one common denominator: They all claim to have a genuine concern for the welfare of children and adolescents. They refuse see the harm in adults having sexual intercourse with minors. Moreover, they feel that sexual relationships between adults and children are healthy. These organizations are highly organized and powerful. They work with one another to escape detection. In addition, they promote the decriminalization of child molestation and pedophilia, as well as lowering the age of consent.
