Multimedia is defined as the use of more than one media and refers to a variety of media combinations, including, but not limited to, static images combined with text, animated and narrated images, interactive graphics, information graphics, narrated images, images accompanied by music, and so on. Multimedia and image design for learning refers to the effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal of combined image-driven media for instructional goals. Given the number of potential media combinations, heuristics to guide an instructional designer in working with multimedia are evolving. An abundance of instructional design models provide a foundation for instructional design practice, but none that are suitable for all applications or specific to the variety of media combinations possible.

Research by Ruth Clark, Richard Mayer, and others provides a focus for design regarding the composition of effective instructional images used in combination with other media. This entry examines multimedia image design in the context of the larger learning environment using a design framework consisting of four learning architectures intersected by digital literacy and interaction control variables.

Clark identifies four architectures for learning (see Table 1) that provide a foundation for considering multimedia image design. A receptive architecture is a learning environment that is minimally interactive and provides image-based support in the form of one-way communication between an instructional artifact and a learner. In general, receptive architecture images are accessible to the learner in a number of forms, some of which are static, animated, narrated, or filmed. Learners view these images, but instructional designers lack specific data, or learner feedback, about how the images are actually interpreted by the learner.

Directive architecture (Clark, 2000)

Instruction focuses on acquisition of knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Instructional content tends to have a hierarchical and sequential nature. Behaviorist learning theory supports directive strategies.

Involves access to a visual artifact (a job-aid, book, slide-based lecture, movie, demonstration).

Uses the instructional strategy structure:

ACCESS → PRACTICE → CHECK UNDERSTANDING

Employs other visual strategies such as

Access → Identify visual examples/non-examples → Check understanding

Access → Draft/sketch examples → Check understanding

Access → Organize information visually (mind map, flowchart, outline, list, chart) → Check understanding

Guided-discovery architecture (Clark, 2000)

Instruction focuses on activating prior knowledge and challenging a learner or group of learners to solve a problem or think critically. A facilitator supports learners with feedback and direction when needed. Learners visualize and create images (see exploratory architecture examples above) using technology and check their understanding using rubrics, tools, and facilitator feedback. Cognitive learning theory supports this architecture.
