In 2009, Daniel Andreas San Diego became the first American to be added to the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list. He was sought in connection with acts of environmental terrorism committed in 2003. San Diego was known to have connections to an animal rights extremist group known as the Revolutionary Cells—Animal Liberation Brigade (RCALB).

San Diego was born in Berkeley, California, in 1978, and he grew up in the San Francisco area. He attended Terra Linda High School in San Rafael, California, and later attended classes at the College of Marin in Kentfield, California. His father was a city manager for Marin County. San Diego worked for a time as a computer network specialist, and he traveled internationally and was a skilled sailor. His multiple tattoos make reference to environmental causes.

The bombings in question occurred in 2003 at corporations in the San Francisco area with ties to Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), a British-based research company that performs laboratory tests on animals. HLS had been the focus of strong activism by a campaign called Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) since 1999. SHAC was formed by a group of activists dedicated to ending laboratory testing on animals. The campaign extended to companies that did business for HLS, which is why the two corporations in California were targeted. The first bombing was on August 28 at the Chiron Life Sciences Center, a biotechnology firm in Emeryville, California. Two bombs were set off one hour apart, at 2:55 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., outside Chiron office buildings. The second bombing occurred a month later, on September 26 at 3:22 a.m. at the Shaklee Corporation in Pleasanton, California. An improvised explosive device loaded with nails was set off outside the commercial office building. Shaklee makes eco-friendly products such as vitamins and shampoos, but it is a subsidiary of Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., which has ties to Huntingdon Life Sciences. No people were injured in any of the bombings.

San Diego allegedly posted a claim of responsibility for the bombings on the Internet, stating they were done in the name of “animal rights.” San Diego disappeared in October 2003, though he was under surveillance as a suspect in the bombings. He was indicted in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in July 2004. The FBI has offered a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to San Diego's arrest.
