The level of measurement defines the relation among the values assigned to the ATTRIBUTES of a VARIABLE. Social science researchers conventionally use four such levels: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. For defining these four types of measurement, an increasing number of ASSUMPTIONS are required. For instance, a NOMINAL VARIABLE needs only discrete categories for representing its attributes, an ORDINAL MEASURE has attributes that are ordered, an INTERVAL. measure requires equal distancing among them, and a ratio scale also has a meaningful absolute zero.
