Grand Theft Auto (GTA) invites players to enter a world that allows them to vicariously live out fantasies that in real life would garner time behind bars. Fighting, stealing, and assaulting innocent bystanders are just a few of the many perks of deviant behavior that can be exercised in this controversial game. Players can take on the role of a criminal in a big city, typically a lowly individual who rises in the ranks of organized crime over the course of the game. Various missions are set for completion by the figureheads of the city underworld, generally criminal, which must be completed to progress through the storyline. Bank robberies, assassinations, and other crimes feature regularly, but occasionally taxi driving, firefighting, pimping, street racing, or learning to fly an airplane are also involved as alternate adventures, which can be done at any time during the game, with the exception of the periods performing main missions. Characters can even have sex with prostitutes in the game.

GTA is a computer and video game created by the Scottish company DMA Design (now Rockstar North) and published by BMG Interactive (a subsidiary of BMG Records) in 1997. The game allows players to assume the role of a criminal who can roam freely around a big city. There are currently nine games in the series, with a further two expansion packs for the original.

Grand Theft Auto, now known primarily as GTA 1, was the first game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Many GTA games have been made since, such as GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas. Grand Theft Auto, the first title in the GTA series was released on PlayStation in 1997/1998 and also for Windows PCs. The game is set in three different fictional cities, Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City. These renditions of the cities are vastly different from their more well-known counterparts in the GTA III era. In the game, you can choose one of about six protagonists, and even change their names. It begins with only one level to choose from.

Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 was made as an expansion pack for GTA, and Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 was in turn an expansion pack for London 1969. Both of these games require the original GTA disc to work.

The second game in the series, Grand Theft Auto 2, was developed for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation and Dreamcast and released in 1999. Set in the indeterminable future, it featured updated graphics and somewhat different game play based upon the player's appeal to various criminal organizations. A reduced Game Boy Color port was also produced.

Grand Theft Auto III and subsequent games have more prevalent voice acting, and radio stations, which simulate driving to music with disc jockeys, radio personalities, commercials, talk radio, pop music, and American culture. There have been 10 soundtracks released for this game series, making the music an important character in the game.

The use of vehicles in an uncharted urban environment provides a basic simulation of a working city, complete with pedestrians who obey traffic signals. Players can pick their cars, steal their cars, and detail their cars however they like. This series of games makes it easy for a player to customize their gaming experience.
