The Journal of Nanoparticle Research is published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in the Netherlands, with Mihail C. Roco of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) as editor-in-chief. The editorial board of this journal represents a wide variety of scholars from both developed and developing countries such as the United States, Australia, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, and China, which makes this journal international in a true sense.

The first issue of the Journal of Nanoparticle Research covered a wide variety of areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology research, informing the reader of the diversity and versatility of the Journal. Subsequent volumes confirmed these characteristics and also maintained its international flavor. The Journal of Nanoparticle Research has become a destination for researchers in the area of nanoparticles, and the journal's popularity rose so much that the impact factor of the Journal became 2.338 in 2007. Journal contributions come from academia, industry, government, and nongovernmental organizations. Contributions have explored the utilization of nanoparticle systems for enhancing a phenomenon or process and particle assembling into hierarchical structures, as well as formulation and the administration of drugs. Synergistic approaches originating from different disciplines and technologies and interaction between the research providers and users in this field are encouraged. The content of the Journal intersects various scientific and technological areas.

Several journals have emerged to keep pace with the growing research activities in the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Nanoparticles are a key component of such research. Although several journals covering this field coexist, the Journal of Nanoparticle Research focuses on the specific concepts, properties, phenomena, and processes related to particles, tubes, layers, macromolecules, nanocrystals, nanolayers, nanotubes, clusters, and other finite structures of the nanoscale-size range, surrounded either by gases, liquids, or solids. Along with publishing research work in the above-mentioned areas, this journal also encourages research concerning the interaction of science and technology with society. The objective of this journal is to disseminate knowledge of the physical, chemical, and biological phenomena and processes. Their coverage includes synthesis, assembly, transport, reactivity, and stability, and emphasizes realization and application of systems, structures, and devices with novel functions obtained via precursor nanoparticles. Several special issues have featured topics such as nanoparticle synthesis methods, occupational health implications, nanomaterials for biochemical sensors and applications, thermal conductivity of nanofluids, and nanomanufacturing.

The Journal of Nanoparticle Research also publishes original full-length papers (about three-quarters of its content), letters to the editor for timely dissemination of scientific breakthroughs, and short technical statements on novel technologies and applications. A regular editorial/commentary page called “Perspectives” is also published by the journal. Perspective articles have a wide breadth of appeal because they evaluate research, industrial, and societal trends centered on the topic of nanotechnology. A decade later, the Journal continues to promote the dissemination of original scientific concepts, interdisciplinary research, manufacturing techniques, and novel applications in several areas of nano-science and nanotechnology research.
