Radio is the wireless transmission of sound frequencies over airwaves through electromagnetic radiation, carrying information in the form of sound, words, and music. Sound is carried by the modulation of specific properties of the radiated waves such as phase, amplitude, or frequency. The striking of the waves to an electrical conductor induces an alternating current in this conductor via the oscillating waves. In this manner, the original sound produced before to modulation is extracted and converted back to its original form through a transducer, such as a radio speaker, thus producing sound.

The invention of radio cannot be attributed to a single person or date, but rather is a joint effort between the inventions of various scientists around the world. Gugliemo Marconi (1874–1937) is most often credited with its invention because his device is considered the first successful radio transmission system in history in 1895, and in 1896 he was awarded a British patent for his radio with “Improvements in Transmitting Electrical Impulses and Signals and In Apparatus There-For.” Other important names in the birth of radio include Nikola Tesla (1856–1943), Heinrich Hertz (1857–94), James Clerk Maxwell (1831–79), Alexander Stepanovich Popov (1859–1905), and Oliver Lodge (1851–1940).

The earliest use of radio was military, specifically maritime, to broadcast telegraphic messages in the form of Morse code, a series of dots and dashes that represent individual letters and numbers to send information from sea to land. Wireless radio became a household name because of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic in April 1912, in which a distress signal was sent that saved over 1,000 lives. Following the Titanic disaster, Marconi opened the first radio factory to cater to heavy demand for the purpose-built radio. Two-way radios are used for dual communication, often in the case of marine, aeronautical, and law enforcement use. Such dual-way radios are known as transceivers. Citizens band, or CB, radios were popular in the 1970s, and allowed people to talk to each other from varying distances.
