Intonation involves the real-time adjustment of the frequencies of musical tones in music performance. This is generally done “by ear”: musicians listen to the sound of their own performance, both holistically (the whole impression of all instruments or voices) and analytically (their own instrument or voice relative to the ensemble), and adjust frequencies to achieve a desired effect. The desired effect is often, but not always, a form of consonance: tones sound well together when they are properly in tune. The interesting question, then, is: What is “in tune” exactly? Empirical studies have shown that what musicians consider to be “in tune” is strongly influenced by their experience of different tuning systems — especially the 12-tone equal temperament that is widely used today. From a theoretical viewpoint, tuning systems are based on mathematical principles, of which the most common are frequency ratios of small whole numbers and equal subdivisions of the octave. Since these two principles generally contradict, and each allows for many different culturally conditioned approaches, there is a long history of disagreement and conflict about interval sizes in music theory. This entry focuses on tuning in the Western classical tradition, for which the most research literature exists.

Intonation and Tuning

Intonation and tuning are different but related processes. Tuning refers to the adjustment of frequencies before a performance begins. The piano tuner tunes the piano, the guitarist tunes the open strings of the guitar, and the wind player tunes at least one tone on the instrument to a standard reference. Intonation is the real-time adjustment of tone frequencies in performance. Intonation is only possible on instruments that allow for the possibility of real-time adjustment. Instruments such as the voice, string instruments without frets, and the trombone allow almost unlimited adjustment of the frequency of a tone. Others allow for only smaller or more subtle adjustments: the flute or clarinet, by adjusting loudness or embouchure, or the degree to which holes are covered; and perhaps even the guitar, by interactions between plucking force and pressure of left-hand fingers along the neck rather than perpendicular to it.

Tuning and intonation have been complex, controversial topics throughout Western music history. Many of the earliest texts that might be referred to as music theory are in large part explications of tuning systems that bring together technical, aesthetic, and even metaphysical concerns. Even in modern times, a given form of tuning can be advocated with evangelical fervor. In essence, what is often sought is some kind of balance between the desire for “pure” intervals (often considered to correspond to adjacent tones in the harmonic series, but tending to deviate systematically from those ideals in performance) and the desire to work within flexible scales that permit complex chromatic modulation, for which tuning compromises are necessary. This search has led not only to a vast range of tuning solutions, but also to an impressive range of methodologies for determining them.

The Pythagorean Tradition

Early efforts to formalize tuning involved the Pythagorean monochord. These efforts used simple arithmetic divisions of string lengths to determine intervallic ratios. Later attempts to generate equally spaced subdivisions of a given interval along a logarithmic scale of frequency involved calculating the nth root of the corresponding ratio. Thus, the history of tuning theory is in large part the history of the search for solutions to how to either represent or approximate “pure” intervals in increasingly chromatic contexts.
