Universal limits on mental capacities such as memory and attention span have important effects upon the perception and cognition of music. They lead individuals, when listening to a piece of music, to favor certain ways of making sense of it and representing it in memory. It seems likely that composers and performers have long been aware, on some level, of such constraints and preferences, and that this knowledge has informed their decision making in a variety of ways. Such factors also appear to have played a significant role in the emergence of the characteristics of musical styles. It has been suggested that more recent advances in the understanding of cognitive constraints and preferences should now inform the development of analytical models and compositional approaches.

Cognitive Constraints and Cognitive Preferences

When one listens to music, one has the choice of inferring a large number of possible structures from the musical surface. In making the choice, one automatically seeks out structures that can be encoded and committed to memory more easily and with greater stability. This minimizes cognitive workload and conserves memory, therefore reducing the risk of mental fatigue or of reaching memory limits.

One example of such preferential behavior is the tendency to look for similarities of various kinds between musical events. Such similarity makes music easier to process because it requires the listener to remember fewer unique events; however, it can also provide a basis on which events can be conceptually grouped together. This serves to separate a continuous stream of events into a smaller (and therefore more manageable) number of larger units. These groups can then be compared and themselves organized into further groups, and so on, allowing the listener to build up a hierarchical, and hence particularly stable, mental representation of the musical structure (although the complexity of this representation may itself be subject to cognitive constraints).

Another such predisposition is exhibited when one listens to unfamiliar melodies. Limited memory capacity constrains the ability to encode these with accuracy straightaway, so they are stored largely as contours: one remembers their changes of direction rather than their every intervallic detail.

Cognitive Constraints, Composition, and Performance

It seems reasonable to assume that the composition of pieces of music has always been informed to some extent by consideration of the cognitive constraints and preferences of the listeners to which they were to be presented.

Such factors can be seen to have shaped some of the fundamental features shared by the music of almost all cultures. The prevalence of repetition, perhaps the simplest possible means of creating musical similarity, is one example. Another is the scale: the fact that the vast majority of known scales consist of five to seven pitch classes, repeated at intervals of an octave, reflects what is believed to be the upper size limit of one's memory for any fixed collection of elements. Similarly, the concepts of pulse and meter can be seen to facilitate the processing of rhythmic information by providing a framework onto which it can be mapped by the listener, as well as by indicating when particular attention should be paid, so allowing mental energy to be conserved at other times.
