Flexibility describes the ability of a joint to move through the normal range of motion, an ability that plays an important role in carrying out activities of daily living as well as in successful participation in many types of sport. Flexibility is in part an inherited characteristic, which can be improved with training, and differences in flexibility have been observed at the population level by gender (women are more flexible than men), race/ethnicity (blacks are more flexible than whites), and age (flexibility decreases with age). Athletes have long been advised to stretch before practicing or playing their sport on the grounds that such a practice would improve performance and prevent injuries. However, these benefits were asserted without supporting evidence, and recent research has suggested that pre-exercise stretching has an equivocal effect on performance and may in fact be harmful but that stretching after exercise or outside the period of exercise may confer benefits.

Definitions

Flexibility is a property of bodily tissues that determines the range of motion available without injury. It is affected by several factors, including inherent flexibility, history of injuries, and presence or absence of a warm-up. Flexibility can be increased by several methods, including static, isometric, and ballistic stretching and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). Passive stretching is a type of slow, sustained muscle lengthening practiced with a partner. Static stretching is slow, sustained muscle lengthening in which a stretch position is held by the participant for 15 to 60 seconds. Isometric stretching is static stretching against an immobile force. Ballistic stretching is the use of a jerking or bouncing movement to rapidly increase the length of a muscle. PNF is passive muscle lengthening practiced with a partner after an antagonistic muscle has been contracted. All these methods of stretching have their advocates, and there is insufficient evidence to recommend one over another. However, concerns about injury have dropped ballistic stretching out of favor, while passive and PNF stretching both require a skilled partner to work with, and some believe that PNF stretching may increase the risk of injury.

Measures of flexibility usually assess static flexibility, meaning that they determine the range of motion achieved by an immobile participant (e.g., sitting with straight legs and holding a stretch position as far forward as possible). The relationship between static and dynamic flexibility (the range of motion available during activity), which is more useful in most athletic and active pursuits, is not clear.

Effects of Stretching on Flexibility and Performance

Many things are still not fully understood about flexibility and stretching. For instance, it is well-known that some people are naturally flexible but never perform stretching exercises, while others may engage in frequent stretching exercises and yet show little improvement in flexibility, and the reasons for these differences are not clear. In addition, some people achieve large gains in range of motion after stretching, while others do not, an effect found in both human and animal studies, and the change in range of motion after stretching also varies by the muscles involved and the age of the participants. The reasons for these differences are not fully understood, and any general statements about stretching and flexibility should be taken in this context.
