That part of the geological record comprising stratified materials (see stratification), principally sediments, sedimentary rocks, pyroclastic material and lavas. These materials can be divided into units that have temporal significance using the principles of stratigraphy, and provide a historical record of processes and events affecting the Earth’s surface.
