A spectroscopic technique for elemental analysis based on the excitation of particular atoms by a laser beam and the detection of the photo ions produced. Small numbers of atoms can be detected, such as the rise in relatively rare rhodium (Rh) along with more common iridium (Ir) in sedimentary rocks at the k-t boundary leading to Rh/ Ir ratios coincident with those in meteorites (and hence strengthening the hypothesis of mass extinctions from an extraterrestrial cause).
