The formation of methane gas (CH4) by decomposition under anaerobic conditions. It is carried out by micro-organisms (methanogens) and is the final stage in decomposition, resulting in the further breakdown of the products of fermentation. There is evidence, however, of methane emissions from plants under aerobic conditions by an unknown mechanism.
