A local variation in the strength of the Earth’s gravity field that can be attributed to variations in the density of buried materials. In geophysical surveying, a Bouguer anomaly is a gravity reading that has been corrected for the predictable effects of altitude and latitude: residual variations in Bouguer anomalies can be interpreted in terms of buried geological or archaeological features.
