The advancing boundary between frozen and unfrozen soil, sediment or rock, which penetrates into these Earth materials from the surface. It should be distinguished from the cryofront, which is the 0°C boundary, and the thawing front, which is the boundary between seasonally frozen and seasonally thawed soil.
