Advice and Consent

Advice and consent is the power the Constitution grants to the Senate, but not the House, to approve or reject certain actions by the president. These are nominations of most high-ranking and many lesser persons in the executive branch and independent agencies and consenting to the ratification of treaties submitted by the president. Nominations require a simple majority; treaties require a two-thirds majority. (See appointment power.)
