Regional Whips
Party leaders in the 435-member House of Representatives need layers of assistant leaders to help them ride herd on their members. Regional whips, the lowest level of the Democratic leadership structure, keep in touch with party members from a particular area of the country and try to make sure they turn up for important votes. Regional whips at one time were known as zone whips.
