Johnson, Hiram

Hiram Johnson (1866–1945), a California Republican, was an isolationist leader in the Senate in the period of World Wars I and II. Before entering the Senate in 1917, Johnson served six years as a reform governor of California. He was Theodore Roosevelt's running mate on the unsuccessful Progressive (Bull Moose) ticket in 1912. In the Senate, Johnson worked to block U.S. participation in the League of Nations and the World Court following World War I. He opposed U.S. participation in World War II and the United Nations Charter in 1945.
