I was born in New York City in June 1940 and attended public schools in New York, culminating in a BA from City College of New York in 1962. I attended the University of Illinois, in Champaign, where I received my PhD in clinical psychology in 1966. I then took a position as assistant professor at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, where I remained until I took early retirement in 1998. I am currently distinguished professor emeritus and spend

I am one of the founders of cognitive behavior therapy. My contributions to the field have been noted by North American clinicians in a survey reported in the American Psychologist. I have been voted “one of the 10 most influential psychologists of the century.” My 1977 book, Cognitive Behavior Modification: An Integrative Approach, is a Citation Classic. This initial book was soon followed by a series of authored, coauthored, and edited books that reflect my broad interest in applying cognitive-behavioral intervention to a variety of clinical problems. These books include Stress Inoculation Training (1985); Pain and Behavioral Medicine (1983); Facilitating Treatment Adherence: A Practitioner's Guidebook (1987); Nurturing Independent Learners (1998); and two clinical handbooks, The Assessment and Treatment of Individuals With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (1994) and Treating Individuals with AngerControl and Aggressive Behaviors (2001).

I am editor of the Kluwer-Plenum series on stress and coping, have served as coeditor of Cognitive Therapy and Research, and have served on the editorial boards of more than a dozen journals. I have received many honors in recognition of my contributions, including being the honorary president of the Canadian Psychological Association and the recipient of the Research Award of the American Psychological Association.

I have consulted and presented training workshops worldwide. My current commitment is to work on reduction of violence, so my grandchildren will inherit a safer world.
