Scheduling is the short-term planning stage concerned with the preparation of detailed production plans, which will include the allocation of work to different work centres (assignment) and the sequencing of different jobs through these work centres.
Scheduling in Context
Planning for operations is a context-dependent problem. Industries which are capital intensive need to assess their investment needs a long time in advance, as financing, building, and launching facilities into production can take up to several years. The oil industry, for example, cannot open a new oil well overnight. Installation of new capacity requires an initial exploration phase, the building of facilities, and the installation of an adequate logistics network (e.g. a pipeline).
