Deviance Mini Case Study
Deviance Mini Case Study
Rationale
It is important that you know and truly understand sociological theories and concepts. One of the easiest ways to demonstrate your understanding is to apply a theory or concept to a concrete example. For this activity you and your group will be writing a mini case study that will provide a concrete example of the theory (or theories) of deviance your group is assigned.
Instructions
First Day of Activity
You will be working with a group to write your case studies. You will have part of two class periods to work on your mini case study. Each group will be assigned a theory of deviance. Your group is to write a case study about the assigned theory. In this first session, your group will have about 20 minutes to discuss the theory and identify its major premises. This should also give you enough time to begin brainstorming possible ideas for your mini case study. You will have about 20 minutes in you next class to actually write your case study. Your instructor may read you a sample mini case study.
Notice:
- the mini case study is relatively short
- a fictitious person is specifically identified
- a specific situation, that could possibly be true, is described
- enough information is provided so the theory can be identified
Use Worksheet 1 as a guide for your group's discussion. One person needs to act as a recorder for your group and write down key words or phases to remind you during your next class period of what your group discussed. Your instructor will be available as your group works if you need assistance or clarification.
Before the next class period, when your group will actually write a mini case study, use Worksheet 2 to draft a mini case on your own. Bring this worksheet with you to the next class. Your instructor may collect this for a grade or credit.
Second Day of Activity
You and your group will have 20–25 minutes to write a mini case study for your assigned theory of deviance. Your instructor may read you another sample mini case study.
Use Worksheet 3 to write your case study. Be sure that all sections are completed on the worksheet and that you turn it in to your instructor before you leave class today. During your next class period we will be looking at some of the mini case studies groups have written and determining which theory is best described in each mini case.
Third Day of Activity
Today you will be applying theories of deviance to the some of the mini cases that have been written. Your instructor will provide you with a handout with several mini case studies. You will have about five minutes to read the cases and determine which theory is being described in each case study. You can write the theory in the margins. Your group will have 10–15 minutes to discuss the mini-case studies and complete Worksheet 4.
