An organized and consistent system of general propositions used to explain and predict a specific set of social phenomena. According to the scientific method, theories are generalizations that evolve from social research. Theories are always changeable according to new data and, therefore, must remain predictive of future phenomena and be logical and testable. Theories are distinguished from hypotheses, which are generally specific experimental applications of a theory. Feminist theories in sociology, for example, emphasize the role of gender inequality and male dominance in society.
