Social Pressure
A social demand or force that can compel a person to behave in a certain way or to adopt certain characteristics. Sources of the pressure include family members and peers, and media images. For example, people may feel social pressure to be married or have children by a certain age. Adolescent girls and boys may feel social pressure to match a given body type, even if unrealistic. Social pressure can then lead to stress or strain, such as when teenage girls become anorexic or teenage boys take steroids to alter their bodies.
