Discrimination against an individual based on his or her gender. Sex discrimi nation, which includes sexual harassment, is prohibited in educational programs and activities receiving federal funds under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Title IX applies to most public schools, colleges, and universities. Sexual harassment includes behaviors ranging from requests for sexual favors to conditions that create a hostile environment for individuals of either gender, including same-sex harassment. Other types of discrimination that are prohibited under Title IX include discrimination based on pregnancy and failure to provide equal opportunity in athletics.
