The term refers to personal goal-directed behavior while learning or performing a task. This includes several other cognitive activities. Self-monitoring includes decisions about planning and organizing one's work, taking breaks, and knowing when and where to seek help. Self-evaluation is determining one's progress toward goal achievement and appraisal of the quality of work completed thus far. This reflection or analysis influences problem solving, pacing, and changes in planning. Although self-regulation is an internal process, external cues may be influential, including comparing self with others, learning vicariously, and seeking and receiving help.
