Risky Shift
If a group shows a lack of caution when making a decision, it is termed “risky shift” behavior. Several explanations have been offered to explain the phenomenon:
- Group members rationalize that they have no personal responsibility for the results.
- When contributions to the decision are anony mous or otherwise shielded from view, individ uals feel that they will avoid criticism.
- Those who endorse risk taking in the first place may be more powerful or persuasive than other participants and are thus able to gain the sup port of more cautious members.
