The total number of individuals who have the characteristic of interest in proportion to the population size at any given point in time. The prevalence of a given incident, social phenomenon, or disease is computed by dividing the total number of individuals presenting a given trait or the symptoms of a particular disease at a specific point in time by the total number of individuals in the population of interest. In contrast to prevalence, incidence assesses the number of cases (not individuals) of the characteristic or trait of interest over a one-year period, in proportion to the population size.
