A method of assessing learning based on a collection of student-generated materials that reflect what students are capable of doing on an ongoing basis. Various materials and samples of students' work are placed together in individual portfolios (either a physical container or electronic) and evaluated on a regular basis by the teacher and the student to identify strengths and the areas that need strengthening. By reflecting on the portfolio contents, goals are set by the teacher and the student for future learning. Portfolio assessment reflects the idea that informative assessment begins with the learner and that assessment should be based on multiple examples of a student's work rather than only on a classroom examination.
