The practice of worshiping and believing in the existence of more than one deity. Polytheists believe in the existence of various gods that are each characterized by distinct features. The term pantheon refers to the entire group of gods that characterizes a given polytheistic religion; this term is also used to designate the temples built in honor of these different deities. Ancient Greece was an example of a polytheistic society that believed in the existence of numerous different deities. Hinduism is an example of a contemporary polytheistic religion.
