Peel, Sir Robert
The prime minister of the United Kingdom between 1834–1835 and 1841–1846. In 1829, when he was Home Secretary of England, he founded the first police force in Great Britain and created the Metropolitan Police. Sir Robert Peel advocated for many principles that form the basis of modern community policing practices. Peel believed that the police's main mandate was to prevent crime and disorder and that this should be achieved with minimal disturbances and intrusion in the lives of community members. Peel's policing model also emphasized the importance of partnership and collaboration between the police and community members.
