Not Guilty
When charged with a criminal offense, the accused is given an opportunity to enter one of three pleas. The defendant can plead guilty, not guilty, or nolo contendere (no contest) at arraignment. When defendants plead not guilty, they assert their inno cence at arraignment. Not guilty verdicts are issued when the prosecution fails to meet the burden of proof necessary to secure conviction.
