Nonlethal Force
The use of force resulting in injuries or impairment of any type but not death. Police officers or other law enforcement officials are generally authorized to use nonlethal force in certain circumstances in which other means have failed, such as to prevent injury to a third party, when an individual resists arrest, and so on. Nonlethal force may be administered through physical force or through the use of various instruments, electronic (tasers, etc.) and nonelectronic (pepper spray, stick, etc.). While it is not used with the intent to kill, deaths do occasionally occur as the result of nonlethal force.
