Modus Operandi (MO)
The mode of operation. In criminology and forensics, the term is used to describe a characteristic pattern or signature. In the social sciences and program evaluation, the modus operandi method (MOM) is a technique popularized by Michael Scriven (1991) for investigating cause-effect relationships. Causal agents known to precede an effect are identified, and those not present or operating are eliminated by checking for the presence of the MO pattern. For further reading, see Scriven (1991).
