Mapping
The charting of locations on a plane surface. In the social sciences, data mapping has been used to chart and analyze patterns in social phenomena, such as illness, poverty, or crime. Specifically, crime mapping has been used extensively by both criminologists and law enforcement to allow visualization of patterns of criminal incidents and the location of other variables, such as public housing, schools, or ethnicity. Crime mapping has been facilitated by the use of geographic information systems (GIS) software, which uses spatial data analysis to display and analyze patterns in mapped data.
