Legal Hearing
A preliminary legal proceeding before a judge or other decision-making body or officer without a jury in which charges, evidence, testimony, and arguments are presented to determine issues of fact and law. Hearings are usually brief and informal and may be held before or during a trial to decide specific questions or motions, such as the admissibility of evidence, that will determine how and whether a trial may proceed. The support of defendants' due process means that hearings are now used for administrative decisions that were once made informally.
