The enforcement of the laws of a local, state, tribal, or federal justice agency to prevent or investigate crime and apprehend and detain individuals suspected or convicted of criminal offenses. Police functions may include the protection of citizens' life and property, the enforcement of criminal law, and criminal investigation, though specialized police units exist specifically for functions such as traffic regulation, homicide, explosive disposal, and crowd control.
