In the criminal justice system, the term refers to an individual's aims, purpose, and intentions when engaging in an illegal act. Intent is a mental state in which an individual sets out to commit an act that is forbidden by the law. Intent implies that the individual engaged in a given act with the intention of stealing, defrauding, harming, killing, and so on. The principle of intent implies that punishment should only be incurred if it has been established that the individuals were morally culpable for their actions. When an individual is accused of an offense, the prosecution and defense teams attempt to determine the intent of the defendant at the time of the offense. For instance, if an individual is accused of murder, it must be demonstrated that the defendant had intent to kill.
