In social science, research refers to the variable that is being manipulated by the researcher. The independent variable stands in relationship to and may affect the dependent, or outcome, variable. The basis of experimental research is to discover whether specific independent variables have an effect on dependent variables, for example, whether watching violent video games (independent variable) has an effect on aggression (dependent variable) in children.
