The state of being responsible for an act, generally an offense, crime, or violation of moral or legal standards. A person can be deemed guilty by others, as in the case of a judge or jury. Guilt can also be an individual affective state that results from acting (or not acting) in a manner in which one regrets. Once a defendant is found guilty or pleads guilty in court, he or she will be sentenced accordingly.
