Generalizability
The degree to which results of a research study on a sample from a given population can be applied to the population at large. Due to the inherent need for control in scientific research as well as the difficulty in obtaining truly representative samples, it is sometimes difficult to generalize findings to a natural setting. The more control a researcher exerts over the study, the less the results will generally be generalizable to the larger population. For more information, see Sirkin (2005).
