Direct Speech
A phrase used to describe the practice of using the exact words spoken by another speaker. The words are indicated by the use of quotation marks (” “) in the writing—for example, “'Here is the book,' she stated.” There are no modifications in direct speech, as the original words spoken by the speaker are used verbatim. Direct speech is a kind of construction that is an ordered arrangement of grammatical units that form a larger unit. Different usages of the term construction include or exclude stems and words.
