A judicial process in which a witness is formally questioned prior to a criminal or civil trial. This inquiry takes place outside the courtroom. The statements and evidence given in a deposition are under oath and carry significant weight. This official testimony will be used during the course of the legal proceedings. Deposition is also a legal term and when used as such refers specifically to the document created when a witness is deposed. In political science, when someone has been removed from a position of power, he or she is said to have been deposed.
