Clan
A group of individuals inextricably linked by a common ancestor. Such links can be biological or symbolic. These kinships can be matrilineal, patrilineal, or inclusive of both lines of female and male descendents. Clans are often smaller groups within a larger tribe. In other cultures, the word clan can also indicate informal political or economic contacts.
