Civil Society
The space between the market and state where actors come together based on shared purposes, values, and interests that are distinct from those of the market or the state, often referred to as the third sector. Civil society is considered important for creating a strong civic culture and strengthening democracy. Civil society includes not only the individuals who participate but also civil society organizations. Civil society is composed of diverse organizations, including voluntary and social organizations, charities, nongovernmental organizations, trade unions, faith-based organizations, social movements, community groups, women's organizations, self-help groups, business associations, coalitions, and advocacy groups. Civil society organizations serve a significant role in informing and educating the public about different issues and their rights as citizens. They provide the foundation for citizens to request service or information, make informed decisions, participate in politics, and hold government accountable.
