A defendant being found guilty in a civil case or lawsuit by a preponderance of the evidence. The defendant is responsible for paying monetary damages. Damages can be compensatory (monetary relief for actual damages), punitive (monetary relief as a form of punishment), or a combination of both. Such damages are ordered by the court.
