This political concept originated alongside the left-right political groupings in the Estates-General during the French revolution beginning in 1789. When asked to choose between the left or right political ideology, many remained uncertain, thus standing in the middle ground of both political ideologies.

Center polity seeks to find a balance between the extremes at a pace that enables progression without stagnation. Modern-day centrists are also known as moderates. For more information, see Lukes (1990).
