A formal statement by an authoritative entity denouncing an individual. There are no formal rules regarding the act of censure. An individual may be censured for various reasons. In 1834, President Andrew Jackson was the first president to be censured by a vote in the Senate, 26 to 20. The president had refused to turn over a controversial document to the Senate.
