Canon Law
The law of the Roman Catholic Church that delineates the regulations and processes of the Church, such as the obligations, rights, and moral duties of Catholic patrons; the structure and hierarchy of the Catholic Church; and the administration of the holy sacraments. The first great compilation was in the 12th century under the Benedictine monk Gratian, who produced the Decretum (or Concordia discordantium canonum of ca. 3,800 texts), which formed the Church's legal basis (with many revisions throughout the centuries) until the early 20th century. The Canons, revised again in 1983, are only amendable by the Pope. For more information, see Malone (2007).
