A violent attack against another person. An assault is a verbal or physical confrontation with the intent to do injury or harm. The criminal law classifies assault into various categories. Aggravated assault is any attack that involves a weapon. The level of harm is not pertinent to this classification. A simple assault is an attack in which no weapon was used and the victim incurred minor injuries. Assault and battery is a legal term conveying that a person has been the victim of physical violence. Attempted assault recognizes the intent to harm regardless of what actually occurred. Statistics regarding assault differ greatly along gender, racial, and economic lines.
