Accountability (Sociology)
The principle of holding people responsible for having participated in, contributed to, or effected an occurrence. To be accountable is to be liable for what has taken place. Accountability often implies obligation and a subsequent expectation to act to counter or explain the behavior for which one is accountable. Accountability is an important component of the criminal justice system, particularly as it relates to law enforcement. In a democratic society, the police are accountable to the community for their actions.
